CCS history

Apparently California Computer Systems was founded by associates of California digital surplus dealers and of the Homebrew Computer Club. Check my WAMECO Web page for more information. But in 2009, John Mason who co-founded CCS gave me his history of the company, and its relationship to Solid State Music or SSM, another S-100 company. There are also responses from former CCS staff. - Herb Johnson

CCS system owners today

Rich Camarda has several running S-100 systems. I've listed a few on my S-100 Web pointers page. Rich provided me some CCS 2422 floppy controller fixes in this file. He has two CCS-based systems, as he describes to me:

"I do not actually have a CCS case [for my CCS systems]. In fact the currrent boards are in an IMSAI chassis, which I built from a kit back in 1981. This system is using the Cromemco ZPU & TUART, a Compupro RAM-17 and the CCS 2422 floppy controller. I modified the BIOS, using the TUART for my console and Diablo printer. I also have another CCS board set up in a different S-100 chassis with the CCS 2422 controller, CCS 2810 CPU, and the CCS 2065 RAM Board. This boots up the supplied CP/M 2.2 BIOS from CCS. I built my first CCS controller from a kit and actually spent time with Robert Mason, who wrote their BIOS and ROM software. I worked across the street from them when I was at Shugart Associates, and in the development of the 3.5" floppy (which Sony got most of the credit for, but their drive looked nothing like what was finally the standard, it was actually Shugart's team that I worked with who developed that drive). I spent time with Robert in the CCS offices to discuss interface and timing for floppys. He was a pretty cool guy."

In Oct 2010 CCS owner Nick Papadonis contacted me for CCS documentation, to help him bring his system back up. After obtaining the docs, he mentioned this about the 2422 Floppy Disk controller documentation. "The page describing the drive select bits may be incorrect. A Rev C version of the manual is correct: DS3 DS2 DS1 DS0. Where DS0 is LSB." Some of our discussion about working on the CCS BIOS, and converting it from 8-inch floppy support to 5.25- inch floppies is is on this Web page.

Another CCS owner in Dec 2010 is Steve Mastrianni He's running his CCS system with TEAC 55FGR 5.25 inch floppy drives. He was kind enough to provide me a ZIP file of CCS sources and utility programs.. You can read some of my converstation with CCS owner Steve Mastrianni on this Web page.
